Honoring the winners of the Circleville Pumpkin Show
There is so much negativity today in the news and everywhere we look that it is always nice when we can pause to recognize good things that are happening in our community. I would like to take the opportunity to use this blog to highlight some of the positive events that are happening in Central Ohio.
Every October, Ohio’s oldest and largest festival is held in Ohio’s 15th Congressional District. The Circleville Pumpkin Show has kicked off the fall season in Circleville each year since 1903. Like its slogan promises, the Circleville Pumpkin Show really is “The Greatest Free Show on Earth.” This month, I would like to recognize this year’s winners of the heaviest pumpkin contest, Bob and Jo Liggett of Circleville, Ohio. Not only did Bob and Jo Liggett enter the largest pumpkin in the weigh-off; but, their pumpkin shattered the Pumpkin Show record they previously held by 300 pounds. This year’s 1,964 pound giant, which they call “Bessie,” came in less than 100 pounds short of the state pumpkin record. This is the 12th year the Liggetts have entered the largest pumpkin, it is easy to see why fellow contestants consider Bob and Jo the masters of the heaviest pumpkin competition. Bob and Jo Liggett do more than grow record-breaking pumpkins; they are also active citizens of the Circleville community. Bob is a local optometrist, practicing in Circleville since 1964. He is also a member of the Circleville Elks, Circleville Rotary, and the Circleville-Pickaway Chamber of Commerce. Jo has given back specifically to the Pumpkin Show and the Circleville community by writing multiple books on the history of the festival and how it has changed over the years. I am very thankful for events like the Circleville Pumpkin Show that bring our local communities together every year. These events also bring out the best in our communities, like Bob and Jo Liggett. I want to extend my appreciation to everything the Liggetts do to give back to the community and my congratulations for winning the pumpkin competition again this year!
