Six years ago, I started hosting an annual opioid roundtable, where I bring together treatment experts, healthcare providers, law enforcement, and area representatives to have a 360 degree view of the problem, and discuss how we can all work together to curb the opioid epidemic in our communities. Today, bipartisan legislation introduced by Representatives Steve Stivers (R-OH) and Eliot L. Engel (D-NY), H.R. 5272, was included in final passage of H.R. 6, the Substance Use-Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment (SUPPORT) for Patients and Communities Act. This bipartisan legislation unanimously passed the House last week as a stand-alone bill. H.R. 5272 will require the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to issue guidance to grantees seeking to treat mental health and substance use disorders in order to promote the funding and use of evidence-based practices.
