This week, we recognize National Obesity Care Week. This is an epidemic that impacts more than 90 million Americans. It’s not a subject that’s discussed often, but we should support those who are striving to overcome obesity. Much like mental illness, obesity often carries a stigma that prevents people from seeking help. We can break down those barriers if we confront this nationwide challenge. It is an issue that is not going away. In fact, the obesity rate in 2016 was at an all-time high, acco...

I am incredibly proud to represent Central Ohio. It is the home to so many incredible innovations that impact not just Ohioans, but all Americans. Take, for example, the advancements made in biomedical research at institutions like Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Wexner Medical Center at The Ohio State University. I recently had the opportunity to meet with members of both organizations during the August District Work Period, and it only reinforced the importance of their work to finding...

The following may be attributed to Representative Steve Stivers, regarding the vote on H.R. 986: “Make no mistake, Republicans and Democrats are in complete agreement on this: individuals with preexisting conditions must continue to be protected. “Today, the House voted to keep the government open, extend the Violence Against Women Act, and provide critical resources to help the victims of Hurricane Florence. Moreover, this legislation fully funds our nation’s defense, increases our military readiness, dedicates nearly $7 billion to combat the opioid epidemic, and provides important funding for medical research, education, and job training. I was proud to support this legislation, and hope we can use this time to find a permanent solution to provide long-term reauthorization to programs like the Violence Against Women Act.”

Six years ago, I started hosting an annual opioid roundtable, where I bring together treatment experts, healthcare providers, law enforcement, and area representatives to have a 360 degree view of the problem, and discuss how we can all work together to curb the opioid epidemic in our communities. This isn’t just a roundtable full of talk, and no action. Every year, I come away with new ideas that I take back to Washington and work to find a solution.
