Congressman Steve Stivers (R – Columbus) this week presented the Columbus Clippers with a Congressional Record honoring their ninth, and second consecutive, Governor’s Cup victory for the team.

“I congratulate the Columbus Clippers on this season’s Governor’s Cup championship,” Stivers said.  “The team’s success brings the City of Columbus together to celebrate as a community. I am grateful to the players, owners, and staff for all of the hard work and many hours of practice they endured to earn this achievement.”

The Governor’s Cup is a baseball tradition dating back to 1933. It is awarded annually to the International League’s champion. The Clippers’ 2011 Governor’s Cup victory is their second consecutive, having also won the cup in the 2010 season. In total, the Clippers have won the cup nine times, also having earned the award in the 1979, 1980, 1981, 1987, 1991, 1992, and 1996 seasons.

“The Columbus Clippers are a Central Ohio institution,” said Stivers. “I have enjoyed many summer evenings cheering on the Clippers. Attending a game at Huntington Park is a world-class experience, and I’m proud we have the Clippers franchise in Columbus.”

Since 1977 the Columbus Clippers have been Central Ohio’s minor league baseball team. The team plays in the International League and is the Triple-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, one of Ohio’s two Major League Baseball teams. In 2009, the Clippers relocated from Cooper Stadium to the newly-constructed Huntington Park.
