WASHINGTON D.C. – Congressman Steve Stivers (R – Columbus) today introduced legislation to posthumously award the Congressional Medal of Honor to Ohioan, Major Dominic (Don) S. Gentile.  Gentile served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II.

“Upon taking office, I have heard from constituents from across the district asking that Major Gentile receive the Congressional Medal of Honor,” Stivers said.  “It is an honor to request that this World War II hero receive the Medal of Honor for his outstanding and historic service to our nation.”

Gentile destroyed at least 30 enemy aircraft during World War II, making him one of the highest scoring fighter pilots in American history, and also earning him the honored title “Ace of Aces.”  Additionally, Major Gentile was the first to beat, fellow Ohioan, Captain Eddie Rickenbacker’s WWI record of 26 enemy aircraft destroyed.

Major Gentile was awarded several medals including two Distinguished Service Crosses, seven Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Silver Star, the Air Medal, and similar honors from Great Britain, Italy, Belgium and Canada; however he was never awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his service.

The Medal of Honor is the highest award for valor against an enemy force that can be bestowed upon someone serving in the United States Armed Services.
