A bill introduced by Rep. Steve Stivers aimed at making it easier for veterans to use military jobs to find civilian jobs at home has passed the House of Representatives.
The bill would apply to veterans seeking state certifications or licenses for a state-tested nursing assistant, EMT, certified nursing assistant, registered nurse or commercial truck driver. It would require states to consider veterans’ past training when they are considering them for certification into those professions.

The bill, which Stivers, R-Upper Arlington, introduced with Rep. Tim Walz, D-Minn., was tucked into a larger bill aimed at veterans. It passed by voice vote last week.
To date, eight states have passed legislation that develops a process to evaluate military training and experience to meet requirements for certain licensing occupations: Washington, Utah, Colorado, Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia.
A companion bill has been introduced in the Senate.
