The U.S. Senate voted this week to re-name London’s post office, located at 25 S. Oak St., for all local residents killed in the nation’s conflicts.
Legislation to name the London Fallen Veterans Memorial Post Office now heads to the president’s desk for his signature, according to a spokesperson for U.S. Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Upper Arlington). Stivers, who sponsored the legislation, represents Madison County as part of Ohio’s 15th Congressional District.
“This is a small measure Congress can take to honor the lives’ of brave service members who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms,” Stivers stated in a press release. “These men and women deserve to be properly honored for their courageous service and I thank God every day that heroes like these stand on the front lines and protect our freedom.”
The U.S. House of Representatives passed the legislation by a voice vote in June.
Stivers’ original resolution sought to name the post office in memory of London native Lance Corporal Josh McDaniels, who died fighting in Afghanistan in 2011. But the proposed Lance Corporal Joshua B. McDaniels and Veterans Memorial Post Office Building drew protests from other veterans and military survivors who felt slighted by memorial efforts that singled McDaniels.
State Sen. Chris Widener (R-Springfield) testified before the transportation committee last month in support of his effort to name a stretch of Interstate 70 in memory of McDaniels.
The same legislation approved by the U.S. Senate this week will also rename the post office on Leap Road in Hilliard as the “Master Sergeant Shawn T. Hannon, Master Sergeant Jeffrey J. Rieck and Veterans Memorial Post Office Building” in honor of Ohio Army National Guardsmen Master Sergeant Shawn Hannon and Master Sergeant Jeffrey Rieck.
