Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Jefferson Township, attended Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's address to Congress despite the fact that more than 56 Democrats did not attend the speech. Those Democrats argued that House Speaker John Boehner violated protocol by inviting Netanyahu to the speech while the U.S. is negotiating with Iran.
Beatty said she has "proudly supported Israel’s security, economy, and culture."
"While I wish the protocol to have Prime Minister Netanyahu address a joint session of Congress would have been different, it is important that we engage with our allies," she said. "I attended today’s speech, as many of my constituents requested, to remain informed about the challenges in the Middle East. As the Prime Minister stated, a nuclear armed Iran is unacceptable, and Congress and the President have always acted to ensure a nuclear armed Iran does not become a reality."
Rep. Steve Stivers, R-Upper Arlington, said the speech was "very powerful."
Netanyahu, he said, "did a good job of explaining peace through strength."
Elaborating in a statement, Stivers said supporting Israel "should always be a bipartisan issue."
“Inviting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to a joint session of Congress was important, especially during this tumultuous time in the Middle East," he said.
