STIVERS BLOG: March 2016
I am always encouraged to see people in our community give back to help those in need build a better life. This month, I want to recognize a sixth-grader from Hastings Middle School in Upper Arlington who is dedicated to helping people who are struggling in their lives.
There is so much negativity today in the news and everywhere we look that it is always nice when we can pause to recognize good things that are happening in our community. I would like to take the opportunity to use this blog to highlight some of the positive events that are happening in Ohio’s 15th Congressional District.I am always encouraged to see people in our community give back to help those in need build a better life. This month, I want to recognize a sixth-grader from Hastings Middle School in Upper Arlington who is dedicated to helping people who are struggling in their lives. Earlier this month, Max Gillum hosted a dodgeball tournament for the second year to benefit the Refuge, an organization which helps men struggling with addiction. Max has said how strongly he believes that people should get a second chance, which is why he started doing these events. This year, he had the goal of raising $5,000 through the entry fee and donations. His first dodgeball tournament was held last year, where he raised money for Faith Mission, a Columbus-based emergency shelter. He was able to raise $2,800 before receiving an extra from donation from his grandfather getting him to $5,000. Max has even organized events outside of his dodgeball tournaments. Before his first tournament, he organized a 50-50 raffle to raise money for a Columbus homeless service organization. That year, he was able to raise $2,500 to give back. It is incredibly impressive to see a middle school student as engaged and disciplined as Max to organize these events to help others. I want to thank Max for all he continues to do to serve the people in our community who need help the most. He makes a lasting difference in the lives of others, giving them the second chance they should have. If you would like to read more about Max Gillum’s events, please click here. |
