Stivers Introduces Legislation to Protect Public Housing Residents During Coronavirus Pandemic
WASHINGTON – Yesterday, Representative Steve Stivers (R-OH), the Ranking Member of Financial Services Subcommittee on Housing, Community Development, and Insurance, introduced two pieces of legislation to protect public housing residents as communities work to combat the coronavirus pandemic.
The first, the Protecting Our Elderly Residents Act, H.R. 6295, requires the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Public Housing Authorities (PHAs) to establish rules regarding non-emergency and non-resident access to Section 202 elderly housing properties and public housing to limit the spread of COVID-19 to residents.
The second, the PHA Public Housing Flexible Funding Act, H.R. 6296, provides PHAs with funding flexibility to support their COVID-19 response.
“Now, more than ever, it’s critical that we take steps to protect the vulnerable members of our communities, and these two bills do just that,” Stivers said. “By ensuring local leaders have the guidance and resources they need, we can help stop the spread of COVID-19 and protect those who may be at-risk.”
