COLUMBUS – Today, Representative Steve Stivers applauded the allocation of over $37 million in Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to the state of Ohio.

This award is the second tranche of funds allocated under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.  It is required to be allocated exclusively to state governments, and it is intended to target public health, housing and economic disruption needs in the wake of coronavirus.

“Ohioans are resourceful and innovative, and have done a remarkable job throughout this challenge, but resources are essential in helping our communities rebound and come back stronger than ever,” Stivers said.  “We need to empower state and local governments to make the choices that are best for them, and these grants will provide them with the flexibility they need.”

The CBDG program is a flexible program that provides communities with resources to address a wide range of unique community development needs, with the goal of addressing particularly urgent threats to health and welfare of communities.  The CARES Act provided $5 billion in supplemental CBDG funding as part of a larger $150 billion fund to support state and local governments.  Representative Stivers supported the passage of the CARES Act on March 27, 2020.

Representative Stivers serves as the Ranking Republican Member on the Subcommittee on Housing, Community Development, and Insurance.  In addition to conducting oversight of the HUD, the Subcommittee supports the growth of communities across the nation by encouraging economic development.

Eligible communities and nonprofit organizations can apply for funding at www.development.ohio.gov.
