The following may be attributed to Representative Steve Stivers (R-OH), regarding the vote on H.Res. 72, "Removing a certain Member from certain standing committees of the House of Representatives”:
“I do not know her personally, but Representative Taylor Greene has said things on social media with which I strongly disagree. While her right to free speech is protected by the First Amendment, it does not protect the individuals from the hurt those words can cause.
Each political party in Congress has a responsibility to police our own for actions and comments made when serving in the legislature, but we cannot overstep that authority - and the Constitution - and use it to penalize Members for free speech made as private citizens. In addition, today’s attempt by the Majority flies in the face of 232 years of precedence and the right of political conferences to manage committee assignments. For those reasons, I voted against the resolution.”
